GREENSBORO — Chapel Hill High School athletic director Ronnie Hayes has decided to move to Northern Guilford where he will take over the same position, according to the Greensboro News & Record.
Northern Guilford has been in hot water with the county and N.C. High School Athletic Association for the use of ineligible players. Because of the ongoing investigations that include multiple teams at the school, Northern Guilford's former athletic director, Derrel Force, was one of three staff members to resign from the school.
The News & Record reported that Hayes was hired on Thursday evening, citing new Northern Guilford principal Will Laine. However, Hayes has not been formally introduced to the staff.
Hayes will have the job of restoring the image of Northern Guilford, and he will also have to look at the use of non-faculty coaches - an issue that the Guilford County School Board is expected to look at as well.
In the eligibility scandal that rocked the school, non-faculty coaches came under suspicion for their involvement.
According to the News & Record, letters were mailed to all 26 non-faculty coaches at Northern Guilford informing them that they must reapply for their positions for the upcoming school year.
Northern Guilford's football team was one of the sports teams that came under fire for the use of ineligible players. The investigation into the team continues, but the News & Record reported the investigation could end as early as next week.
Last month, the NCHSAA stripped Northern Guilford's men's basketball team of its 2009 3-A state championship after ineligible players were found on the roster. The school also had to pay a penalty and return all money made at the gate during the playoffs.
Games were also forfeited in baseball, wrestling and junior varsity softball.
