Some playoff insights...

Nov 8, 2008

I've been crunching some numbers over the past several hours (OK, for the last 12 hours), and I've come up with some information that seems to be pretty accurate. It's very preliminary information, and we're still missing a little bit of information from the western part of the state, so this is of course subject to change.

All seven teams from the Cap Seven will qualify for the playoffs. We've been talking about it for some time, and it now appears that all seven teams in the Cap Seven will qualify for the playoffs, based on HighSchoolOT.com projections.

Cary & Athens Drive could both get at-large bids. It will be close, but depending on what happened in a few western games that we have not heard from, both Cary and Athens Drive could receive at-large bids to the playoffs. Middle Creek won the draw between the three teams for the final automatic bid from the Tri-Eight.

Fuquay-Varina No. 1 overall in 4-A East. The Bengals should have the No. 1 overall seed in the 4-A East, reporting a 10-0 record after dropping their lone loss.

Wake Forest-Rolesville to battel for No. 1 overall seed. After beating Leesville Road last night, the Cougars could find themselves with the No. 1 overall seed. Other candidates include Hoggard and Jack Britt. All three teams report 9-1 records for the playoffs.

Another Leesville Road-Wake Forest-Rolesville match-up? Looks like it could happen in the second round. Some brackets off of some very raw numbers projects Leesville Road (No. 7) to host Garner (No. 10) in the first round, while Wake Forest-Rolesville (No. 2) hosts Broughton (No. 15). The winner of those two games will face one another in the second round.

Fuquay-Varina will be the big-small cut-off. It now appears certain that Fuquay-Varina will be the first team in the 4-A playoffs, leaving Wake Forest-Rolesville as the last team in the 4-AA playoffs.

A Millbrook-West Johnston rematch. It looks like a first round rematch between the Wildcats - the same match-up we saw last season. Millbrook doubled West Johnston's score last year, but they could get revenge this season.

Of course, all of this is subject to change based on how ties are broken by draw, and based on the results from the western games that we do not have yet.

HighSchoolOT.com is standing by all day waiting for the brackets. We expect to have the preliminary brackets by 4 p.m., and the finalized brackets should be released by 6 p.m.

Be sure to join HighSchoolOT.com on Sunday night at 8 p.m. for a LIVE BLOG to discuss the playoffs.

Well, sure we'd love to invite WJ to north Raleigh for a good time next friday night. I would have to think we'd be the home team this time since our record is better and our conference is much stronger. Of course we'd be happy with anybody coming to Millbrook to play a game in the 1st round, preferably a team from outside the Cap 7.
