1. Wake Forest-Rolesville (8-1, 1) — The Cougars can't wrap-up the Cap Seven Conference this week, but they can guarantee themselves at least a part of the title if they can beat a Millbrook team that was stunned 24-0 by Leesville Road last week. Until they get beat, this is the No. 1 team in the Triangle.
2. Leesville Road (9-1, 4) — You have to move Leesville Road up after their win last week. Anyone who can shut out this Millbrook team is worthy of being considered as one of the best defenses in the state. Defense wins championships, and after their bye week this week, Leesville Road will have a shot at the Cap Seven Championship next week.
3. Hillside (7-1-1, 6) — They did what I thought they were going to do. The Hornets beat Chapel Hill to force a three-way tie in the PAC 6 Conference, and it is a likelihood that we could see that tie hold true at the end of the season. Hillside is a quiet 7-1-1, but they're moving up in the poll.
4. Millbrook (7-2, 2) — I'm not going to drop Millbrook below teams like West Johnston and Chapel Hill based on a single bad game. I know they got shut out, I know it was ugly, I know they have to get that out of their system if they're going to make a postseason run, but I also know that this is still one of the best teams in the Triangle. Millbrook stays in my top five at No. 4.
5. Southern Durham (6-3, 7) — Southern Durham this season reminds me a lot of Southern Durham last season. Started off rocky, made their way through the PAC 6 Conference, and now they could be poised to make a run in the playoffs. Even though this team lost to Chapel Hill, I think they are the better team, and I think they are one of the better teams in the Triangle.
6. West Johnston (8-1, 3) — I didn't want to drop West Johnston out of my top five based on one loss, but I couldn't help it. They haven't blown out their Greater Neuse River competition, they haven't played great competition, and they had a double-digit loss to Knightdale on Monday night. West Johnston may have just lost their chance at the No. 1 seed too.
7. Chapel Hill (6-3, 5) — After beating Southern Durham two weeks ago, Chapel Hill lost to Hillside last week. I predicted the loss for the Tigers, but that doesn't mean I won't drop them in my poll. Chapel Hill is coming on strong, and they're still in a three-way tie for first place in the PAC 6. Based on our current projections, it also appears that Chapel Hill could end up going to the west this postseason... There are some good teams in the 4-A west bracket.
8. Southeast Raleigh (7-2, 8) — Southeast Raleigh barely edged Garner on Friday night. I knew this would be a good game, and it is a quality win for Southeast Raleigh. The Bulldogs can't look ahead, but next week will tell a lot about this team, as well as the West Johnston team that was previously undefeated. That game could bring some big change to the top ten.
9. Fuquay-Varina (8-1, 10) — Not surprisingly, Fuquay-Varina had a big, easy win over Green Hope last week, but the real test comes this week. The Bengals haven't had a very tough schedule, but they are 8-1. We've seen Apex play the top copmetition in the area, and we'll get a feel for how good Fuquay really is when they play Apex on Friday night.
10. Apex (7-2, NR) — If you told me three weeks ago that I would have two Tri-Eight teams in the Triangle Top Ten headed into November, I would have laughed at you. Things have changed, though, and I don't have a choice but to put Apex in... at least until they don't belong. Like I said above, Friday night tells a lot for this team.
UNDER CONSIDERATION
NONE
WHY THEY'RE OUT
Garner - The loss to Southeast Raleigh - although by a small margin - drops their record to a point where I have a hard time justifying keeping them in over a 7-2 Apex team, even if Garner's schedule has been a bit tougher. The Trojans can get back in, though. All they have to do is win.
