Nick's Last Minute Picks: Oct. 23

Oct 24, 2008

Nick Stevens, High School OT

Nick Stevens, High School OT

Well, I've been bringing you bad picks all season long, and this week it is do or die for me. I'm going out on several limbs, and I'm sure I'll take some heat for it, but I've got a feeling we're going to see some "surprises" this week in Triangle high school football.

Let's start with Cary and Apex. I've said it a number of times. This is a classic trap game setup for Apex. The Cougars are undefeated in the conference, as is Fuquay-Varina. Cary is a quiet 3-1 in the Tri-Eight, but their overall record is 3-5, not exactly the 7-1 Apex sees when they look at Fuquay. Tonight is Cary's senior night, and with their loss to Athens Drive (and Athens' relatively simple schedule left in the conference), a win over Apex would help solidify the last automatic playoff berth for the Imps.

I went to the Apex-Cary junior varsity game last night, and Cary beat them 38-15. I don't think it will be that big, but I think Cary wins this game, coming out on top by less than 10-points.

Another limb I'm ready to risk going out on is the Garner and Southeast Raleigh game. It's Garner, folks. They're getting their act together here at the end of the season, and I think they're going to beat Southeast Raleigh tonight, thus placing second in the Greater Neuse River Conference behind West Johnston.

I'm also taking Hillside to bring down Chapel Hill. The Tigers beat Southern Durham last week to take the conference lead, but if Hillside can beat Chapel Hill tonight it forces a three-way tie for the PAC 6.

Here's the bad news for Cary, Garner and Hillside... My upset picks this season have been WAY off! We'll see what happens in a couple of hours.

Here are my last minute picks for week ten:

Apex at Cary — CARY

Cardinal Gibbons at Graham — CARDINAL GIBBONS

East Wake at Clayton — CLAYTON

Garner at Southeast Raleigh — GARNER

Green Hope at Fuquay-Varina — FUQUAY-VARINA

Hillside at Chapel Hill — HILLSIDE

Holly Springs at Smithfield-Selma — SMITHFIELD-SELMA

Jordan at East Chapel Hill — JORDAN

Middle Creek at Lee County — MIDDLE CREEK

Millbrook at Leesville Road — MILLBROOK

Panther Creek at Athens Drive — ATHENS DRIVE

Person at Southern Durham — SOUTHERN DURHAM

Riverside at Northern Durham — NORTHERN DURHAM

Sanderson at Wake Forest-Rolesville — WAKE FOREST-ROLESVILLE

Wakefield at Enloe — WAKEFIELD

West Johnston at Knightdale — WEST JOHNSTON

Don't forget to watch Football Friday tonight on WRAL-TV at 11:35 p.m. Call in your scores and stats at 1-888-472-9725.

Also, join Adam Harris Saturday morning at 8 a.m. for High School OT on 99.9 FM The Fan.

Hey Nick! How does your crow taste! I guess your limb did not prove to be strong enough to hold your GARNER pick!

Yeah, although the last two weeks have been in the 80s, so I'm on the rebound. This season has been really hard to pick for some reason.

Meant to say... "It won't be the first TIME I've ate crow THIS season."

Proofreading... I should try it sometime.

We'll see arinzo. I just think that Garner is better and better every week, and I think they're going to take SER to give them the highest possible seed in the playoffs.

It won't be the first tie I've ate crow all season. Have you been paying attention to my picks? I went from picking 94% last season to 42% this season (not counting this past week). AWFUL!

Nick, Get for real your picking Garner based on what? Southeast has had better ball control ever since the Knightdale upset and the Defense is still stingy as ever. You cannot say the same thing about Garner! When your crow is served make sure it is COLD!
