WRAL has been told by numerous sources that Southern Durham head football coach Jeff Parker has apparently resigned.
So far we have not been able to confirm this with the school or with Parker.
This story broke early this afternoon, but because we felt we needed to check out some of the sources, we did not publish the story immediately. The same source that made us aware of the expected East Chapel Hill hire informed us about rumors this morning concerning Coach Parker. Upon further investigation, here is what we have learned:
According to more than one source, Parker resigned as the football coach yesterday afternoon or evening. Although none of our sources could tell us why he would resign, at least one speculated that he may be leaving the area. Parker was well-liked among the Southern population, taking his team to the third round of the state tournament last season.
This is just one piece to a puzzle that has become very complicated over the past year or so. Darrian Harris took the Southern athletic director job a year ago when Pete Shankle left Southern to become the head baseball coach at Northern Durham. WRAL reported over a week ago that Harris is expected to take the job as East Chapel Hill’s new head football coach. That still has not been confirmed, but we still believe that Harris is the likely replacement at ECH. If Harris is leaving Southern, that would mean a football coach and an athletic director have to hired, which could extend the coaching search.
We tried to contact Southern Principal Rodriguez Teal and Southern Athletic Director Darrian Harris, but as of Thursday morning, we have not heard back. We hope to contact them later today about this issue.
WRAL will continue to follow this story and update it as warranted. Stay with WRAL.com for prep sports coverage you can count on.
