Tarboro's Todd Gurley II (#1) runs the ball as Tarboro defeats Lincolnton 39 to 36 at the 2011 2AA State Championship game Saturday December 3, 2011 at Carter-Finley field in Raleigh, NC.
Each year I come up with five games I want to see.
I don't ever publish them or talk about them, and I don't always get to go to them. After all, I have to do what I have to do for my job. But with 24 hours of high school football this year, I decided I would list the top five games I want to see this season.
(These are in no particular order)
Hillside vs. New Bern - A week one game between two state championship contenders. These two have played twice in the last two years, and each game has been great. One of their meetings was in the regional final in 2010, the year Hillside won the state championship. I think the game this year will tell us a lot about each team.
Nash Central vs. Tarboro - Another week one game that I think will be a good one. I got to see this game last year on a Monday night when Tarboro was "upset" by Nash Central. Turns out Nash Central was just that good. I think this has the potential to be a good one again, and this time it's in Tarboro.
Wakefield vs. Leesville Road - As a fan who loves offense, the meeting between these two teams last year was like going to heaven. It was a shootout between two high-powered offenses, and I think this one could be a fun one again this year. Not to mention it will have big implications on the conference championships.
Cleveland vs. Triton - Again, a game with big conference implications. Cleveland is just a fun team to talk about. So many great story lines. Triton returns defending Eastern Carolina Conference Player of the Year in running back Dedrick Stacker. This game will be a fun one!
Kinston vs. Tarboro - An instant classic last season, this year the game will more than likely decide the Eastern Plains Conference champion. Both of these teams went to a state championship game last season. Tarboro won the title, Kinston lost. The (Kinston) Vikings return more talent from last season, but Tarboro is a machine. This one will be a lot of fun too.
Obviously there are several other games that are going to be good, but these are my five. Hopefully I will get to see at least a couple of them, but if you have an opportunity to see any of these, I hop you will go.
