Long-time coach John Whitmire was named the recipient of the 13th annual Glenn C. Marlow Athletic Achievement Award last week at the annual Kiwanis All-Star luncheon at The Chariot, according to the Hendersonville Times-News.

A graduate of Hendersonville High, Whitmire went on to coach at Hendersonville Junior High in 1965 and from there went on to take the head boys' basketball coaching position at Edneyville High in 1968 where he was one of the school's most successful coaches.

"I'm certainly honored and humbled to receive this award; this means a whole lot to me," Whitmire said. "Mr. Marlow had to be the best administrator in Western North Carolina, no doubt. He was my first coach, and he taught us how to be disciplined, to act in public. The Whitmires and Marlows have known each other for a long time."

Dot Marlow, the widow of Glenn, presented the award to Whitmire. Glenn Marlow served as president of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors during the 1985-86 academic year.

In addition to the Marlow Award, 42 athletes from the four Henderson County schools were recognized for volleyball, girls' tennis, girls' golf, girls' and boys' cross country and boys' soccer.
