For over 30 years, North Carolina high schools have been recognized for athletic excellence with the presentation of the Wachovia Cup.
But this year, the prestigious honor will get a new name – the Wells Fargo Cup.
Wachovia was purchased by Wells Fargo earlier this year, resulting in the new name for the award.
Since 1979, the Wachovia Cup has been awarded to one school in each NCHSAA classification for overall athletic excellence. Points are awarded to schools based on how many teams earn state playoff berths and how far those teams advance.
In addition to the state cups, conference cups are also awarded for the top team in each conference. Conference cups are determined based on conference finishes in each sport.
Standings for the Wells Fargo Cup will be released by the NCHSAA after the conclusion of the fall sports season. The cup winners are announced after the spring sports season and will be recognized at a UNC football game next fall.
