Briana Day rescinds commitment to UNC

Millbrook center Briana Day has rescinded her commitment to North Carolina.

Day told HighSchoolOT.com that she has reconsidered the commitment after giving it some thought.

"I feel like it was too early and I want to explore my options," she said.

Briana's twin sister, Bria, remains verbally committed to the Tar Heels.

A verbal commitment is not binding for a student-athlete or the school. After an athlete makes a verbal commitment, the athlete can rescind the commitment and look elsewhere without penalty. A commitment does not become binding until the student-athlete signs a National Letter of Intent.

Briana Day helped the Millbrook girls basketball team to one of the most successful seasons in school history last year. The Wildcats won the GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational, the Cap 8 Conference regular season and tournament championships, and earned a trip to the N.C. High School Athletic Association's 4-A state championship game.

A member of the Class of 2013, Day has two more seasons left of high school basketball.

Yet another of the "ills" of intercollegiate athletics. The pursuit/recruitment of athletes, an athlete with the requisite size, speed, skills, etc., sometimes YEARS prior to their senior year in high school... RIDICULOUS!!! THAT is the "fault" of the coaches, ADs, and perhaps the NCAA. We want to "simplify" NCAA regulations, but this may be one that needs to be added... schools, coaches cannot begin contacting/recruiting an athlete until a minimum age and/or grade in high school. From the "other side" - that of the parents of an athlete - I can't believe a parent would "allow" this. The only explanation I can see for it is pure, simple "EGO"! No child of mine would make a commitment prior to their senior year in high school... and that would come AFTER considering all options.

Yet another example of intercollegiate athletics "gone berserk"!

Hope the Twins will give the Lady Vols a look. But if they don't want to play that far from home, then give NC State a serious look. Their coach is a National Champion and a graduate of Tennessee. She has Pat Summit in her blood.

I don't know about the constant attention, but I'm sure the free trips continue if the commitment is to UNC.
