For the 10th time in 11 years, the Western representatives held the edge over the Eastern champions in the NCHSAA state basketball championships. For the second straight year, the Western representative took six of the eight title games, with Kinston in the 2-A men and Rocky Mount in the 3-A men breaking through for the East.
In 2009, the Western representative took six of the eight championship games, with only Dudley in the 3-A women and Northern Guilford in the 3-A men winning out of the East, but later Northern Guilford had to vacate its title.
The West took five of the eight championship games in 2008, and the 2007 count had the West winning five of eight, but in 2006, the East representatives took six of the eight titles, with only Bishop McGuinness in the 1-A women and South Mecklenburg in the 4-A women’s games winning for the West.

#54 Kristen Gaffney scores inside during Green Hope High School's 87-61 loss to Butler High School in the NCHSAA 4-A Women's Championshipson Saturday, March 13. (photo by Will Okun)
Green Hope sophomore Kristen Gaffney didn't win the state championship on Saturday, but the Most Outstanding Player from the east did reach a milestone no one else has.
Gaffney tied and broke the record for most points scored in a single season by a sophomore.
The previous record was held by Shea Ralph (Terry Sanford, 1993-1994) who scored 818-points her sophomore season.
In the third quarter of Saturday's 4-A state championship game against Matthews Butler, Gaffney stepped to line to shoot two free throws. She had 817-points on the season.
The 6-foot-1 sophomore hit the first free throw to tie Ralph's record, then hit the second free throw to break the record.
Gaffney finished the game with 25-points. She finished the season with 831-points. So far in her career, Gaffney has 1,054-points.
The closest player to breaking Ralph's 16-year old record was Cetera DeGraffenrid of Smoky Mountain during the 2004-2005 season. DeGraffenreid scored 756-points

#21 Chris Wilson fights for a loose ball during Terry Sanford High School's 63-46 loss to Lake Norman High School in the NCHSAA 4-A Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday, March 13. (photo by Will Okun)
The Class 4-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association men's championship came down to defense and foul shooting. In the end, it was Lake Norman that played the better defense and hit the foul shots when it counted.
Lake Norman made 11 of its last 15 free throws in the fourth quarter - including six straight - to defeat Fayetteville Sanford 63-46 and capture its first state title Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum.
"Lake Norman is a solid, fundamentally sound basketball team," said coach Bill Boyette, whose Fayetteville Sanford team lost its second straight title game and its first game of the season after winning 31 straight. "We missed the front ends of some critical 1-and-1's and they hit their free throws. They were very deserving to win this game tonight."
Lake Norman (26-3) trailed 41-40 heading into the final quarter before outscoring the Bulldogs 23-5 the rest of the way and holding them to their season low in points. Reggie Price scored

#43 Tashawn Mabry goes high for a rebound during Rocky Mount High Schools 84 - 79 victory over Concord High School in the NCHSAA 3-A Mens Championship on Saturday; March 13. (photo by Craig James)
Tashawn Mabry and his Rocky Mount teammates knew their school's history, but the Gryphons hadn't been in a state championship game in a long time.
The last time was in 1982, before any of them were born.
That didn't matter Saturday night as Mabry finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds, leading four Gryphons in double figures as they held off Concord 84-79 in the Class 3-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association men's basketball championship game.
It was the fourth state title for the Gryphons (24-3), but the first since 28 years earlier when the school was in Class 4-A.
"We have gone through the storm this year at our place," Rocky Mount coach Michael Gainey said. "We seem to have overcome all of that. We've accomplished a goal and the pressure is off.
"Concord didn't quit and we didn't want to slow down. I call it street ball. Now we're going to go back to Stone Park and Sunset Park and have a g ood time, but while we're in

#54 Kristen Gaffney has her shot altered during Green Hope High School's 87-61 loss to Butler High School in the NCHSAA 4-A Women's Championshipson Saturday, March 13. (photo by Will Okun)
After one of the most dominating performances in women's Class 4-A history on Saturday, it's hard to believe that Matthews Butler lost four basketball games this season.
But the Bulldogs came into the championship game at Reynolds Coliseum confident it could beat Morrisville Green Hope, a team that entered the game undefeated. Butler had two NCAA Division I prospects in senior center Clair Watkins and junior guard/forward Cierra Burdick, and plenty of size. Green Hope had sophomore forward Kristen Gaffney, who averaged nearly 27 points per game.
The size of Butler and its athleticism was too much for Green Hope as the Bulldogs (25-4) rolled to an 87-61 victory for its first North Carolina High School Athletic Association women's championship.
"We had a tough schedule and lost some games we shouldn't have," said Butler coach Stephanie Butler. "We had some growing pains, but we grew up at the right time."
