Millbrook linebacker James Smith-Williams verbally committed to play football with the N.C. State Wolfpack Tuesday evening, according to his head coach Clarence Inscore.

Smith-Williams, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound rising senior was offered by the Wolfpack in June. He chose N.C. State over other offers from schools including Appalachian State, Davidson, Elon, Charleston Southern, James Madison, Mercer and Western Carolina.

The starting linebacker recorded 70 tackles, ten tackles for loss and four fumble recoveries during his junior season at Millbrook in 2013.

Last season, Millbrook played to a 10-4 record and went 5-2 in the Cap-8 Conference before falling to Wake Forest in the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association state playoffs in quadruple overtime.

Millbrook's 2014 season kicks off Aug. 22 with a home game against the Fuquay-Varina Bengals. The Wildcats will also compete in the HighSchoolOT.com Jamboree against Jack Britt on Aug. 16 at Cardinal

Stevenson was second in Cumberland County last season with 139 tackles. He also recorded 14 pass break-ups, eight tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles. He also scored one defensive touchdown.

Jack Britt is coming off a 9-4 season in which the Bucs finished league play with a perfect 6-0 record. Garner defeated Jack Britt in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-AA state playoffs, 63-56.

A week after Heritage defensive player Jeff Gemmell announced his commitment to UNC-Charlotte, the Huskies have another football player who will play at the next level.

Baker was offered by Elon on June 20.

"Matt ran very well while we were at Elon's Team Camp," McGeorge said. "He is a very athletic, explosive player. Matt is very excited about his opportunity at Elon and is looking forward to his senior season."

Elon offered the 6-foot, 208-pound rising senior as a linebacker. During his junior year, Baker recorded 85 tackles, three sacks, 15 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles and one interception.

On offense, he averaged 5.2 yards per carry and scored three times, with two touchdowns in the team's season-ending loss to Scotland in the first round of the state playoffs.

Elizabeth "Lizz" Layne of Jordan High has received an offer from UNC-Wilmington, according to Falcon women's basketball coach Ty Cox. The offer is Layne's first from a Division 1 school.

A rising sophomore, Layne averaged ten points per game and seven rebounds per game during her freshman year, finishing second on the team in both statistical categories. The 6-foot-1 forward was a PAC-6 All-Conference selection.

In May, Layne made it to the third day of the USA Basketball 17U National Team Trials in Colorado, surviving two cuts and becoming one of the final 70 remaining players from a group that began at 145.

Several other Jordan players are getting next-level interest. According to Cox, Jordan senior and reigning PAC-6 Player of the Year Salita Greene is weighing offers from 12 Division 1 schools, including N.C. Central, Elon, Campbell, Coastal Carolina, N.C. A&T and Appalachian State.
