Carrboro student-athlete honored with scholarship

Posted May 28, 2014

An outstanding student-athlete from Carrboro High School has been named the recipient of the Coy Maddry Memorial Scholarship Award from Orange United Methodist Church.

Katie Wilson has been selected as the winner and will be recognized at worship services at Orange on Sunday, June 1. She will receive a grant of one thousand dollars from the church.

The scholarship comes from the fund established by family and friends in memory of Avery Coy Maddry, a 1990 graduate of Chapel Hill High School and a freshman at North Carolina State University at the time of his death at the age of 18 on January 7, 1991. The fund is administered through Orange United Methodist Church, where Coy was an active member, and the award is in its 24th year.

Wilson played three sports during her career at Carrboro, including two years of swimming and two of lacrosse, but excelled in field hockey, playing three years and earning all-state designation twice. She missed her junior season due to a devastating ACL injury but battled back to have a successful senior season.

An honors student and a member of the National French Honors Society, Wilson served as treasurer of the Class Council at Carrboro. She has been very active as a member at Christ United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill, participating in several mission trips and serving as a junior advisor to the middle school youth group at Christ UMC.

Wilson will attend Sewanee: The University of the South, where she plans to continue playing field hockey.

The scholarship candidates must be varsity athletic letterwinners at a Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools high school who best exemplify Coy's life through qualities he demonstrated: hard work and dedication, strong academics, and exemplary character and leadership as reflected in church, school and civic activities. Coaches and teachers nominate candidates for the honor.

The scholarship is given on an annual basis from the interest accrued by the fund. Memorials may still made to the Orange UMC/Coy Maddry Scholarship Fund, and the address for the church is Orange United Methodist Church, 1220 Martin Luther King Boulevard, Chapel Hill, NC 27514. Ken Hall, Jr. serves Orange as its senior pastor.
