Thon Maker made sure his Carlisle, Va. Chiefs had a successful debut in the HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational.
The 7-foot sophomore – the No. 1 player in the Class of 2016 according to ESPN – finished with a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Chiefs to a 63-57 victory against Raleigh Sanderson in the quarterfinals of the Summit Hospitality bracket.
The Chiefs – in their inaugural HSOT – will now face Wilbraham and Monson, Mass., in the Summit semifinals at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Raleigh Broughton’s Holliday Gymnasium.
“Being off the past two days without even touching a basketball, we got off to a slow start,” Carlisle coach Jason Niblett said. “We were just fortunate enough to make a few more plays than our opponents today.”
Kaleb Johnson finished with 14 points for Carlisle, which also received 11 points from Malcolm N’Diaye.
Sanderson (5-5) was making its first appearance in the HSOT since 2003. Spartans coach Mike Shaw said he was proud of his team’s effort.
“I thought we came out a little bit intimidated and that definitely played to (Carlisle’s) advantage,” Shaw said. “It took us a while to realize we could play with them. … I like the way we competed.”
The trio of Taj Thompson, Chase Gower and Hunter Kuehn finished with 14 points each for Sanderson, which will face Apex Middle Creek at 11:30 a.m. in the consolation bracket on Friday.
