Raleigh, N.C. — Cardinal Gibbons fended off Athens Drive, 42-19 Friday night in Raleigh.
The Crusaders got off to a hot start with Dalen Spruill scoring from five yards out and a two point conversion making the early lead 8-0.
Gibbons got tricky and recovered the ensuing onside kick and decided to score again on the very next play. Nick Frye found Jack Biestek over the middle and just like that, the home crowd was celebrating a 15-0 lead.
Athens would mount a comeback however, scoring before the half to make it 15-7 at intermission.
After trading touchdowns, the Jaguars would score once more to cut Gibbons' lead to 22-19 but that's as far as the visitors from Athens would get.
The Crusaders scored 20 unanswered to send the home crowd away happy with a 42-19 win.
Cardinal Gibbons travels to Southern Durham next week at 7:00 pm. Athens Drive is at Broughton in Week 2 at 7:00 pm.
