Raleigh Broughton High School is playing for its first HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational championship since 1986.
The Capitals (6-5) defeated Rocky Mount 68-56 in the four-team Shavlik Randolph Foundation tournament Tuesday afternoon at their own historic Holliday Gymnasium. The victory advances Broughton into Friday's 5:40 p.m. Randolph championship game against Chapel Hill, which defeated Clayton earlier in the day.
"This is a great opportunity for these kids to go into our midseason break, halfway through the season, on a high note," Broughton coach Jeff Ferrell said. "It's pretty important to win this kind of thing."
Broughton was led by Devonte' Graham's 21 points, while James Hemphill added 16 for the Caps. Rocky Mount was paced by 25 points and eight rebounds by Terrill Hilliard.
"Our biggest problem isn't the other team; most of the time, it's Rocky Mount playing against themselves," said Rocky Mount coach Michael Gainey, whose team faces Clayton at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Randolph third-place game. "We were just trying to overcome some of this big-stage atmosphere."
