For the first time in more than a decade, Raleigh Broughton has advanced to the semifinals of an eight-team tournament at the HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational.
The Capitals (9-1) pulled away from Person County (8-3) in the second quarter and cruised to a 73-50 rout of the Rockets in the first round of the Summit Hospitality bracket of the HSOT.
Broughton will face St. Joseph of Metuchen, N.J., in the Summit semifinals at 4 p.m. on Thursday. St. Joseph was unable to make its Summit quarterfinal game, scheduled for Tuesday at 5:40 p.m., due to flight troubles out of New York City Tuesday morning. A coin flip moved St. Joseph to the winner's bracket against Broughton while Holly Springs -- St. Joseph's scheduled opponent -- will move to the loser's bracket against Person.
On Tuesday, the Caps were led by Appalachian State recruit Devonte' Graham's 23 points. James Hemphill had 14 points for Broughton, while Jamie Rucker added 10.
"I thought we had a pretty solid game, probably one of our more complete games we've had this year," Broughton coach Jeff Ferrell said. "As good as the game was, I thought we had a good second half. We really ran our stuff well; the kids take pride in running our stuff well."
Person was led by second-generation HSOT player Tyrone Outlaw Jr., who finished with 15 points.
Marquis Torain finished with 14 points and Devin Scoggins contributed 10 for the Rockets.
"Broughton played a great game," Person coach Charles Dacus said. "We knew that going in, that they are very disciplined. They play within their system very well."
