After jumping out to an early lead, Broughton had to fend off Sanderson in a Cap 8 boys basketball game.
The Caps defeated the Spartans 58-52 on Wednesday night, setting up a big game with conference front-runner Millbrook on Friday night at Holliday Gymnasium.
Broughton took a 16-11 lead after the first quarter, but Sanderson held the Capitals to just nine points in the second quarter, cutting Broughton's lead to 25-22 at halftime.
The game was close the entire second half.
Broughton outscored Sanderson 12-10 in the third quarter, then offenses got hot in the fourth. Sanderson scored 20 fourth quarter points, but Broughton scored 21 as the Caps held on for the win.
Appalachian State recruit Devonte Graham led Broughton in scoring with 16 points. James Hemphill and Chase Johnston both had 14 for the Caps.
Reggie Traywick led Sanderson with 15 points on the night. Parker Fennema had 12 points for the Spartans, while Will Judy added 11.
The win for Broughton sets up a huge game on Friday night against Millbrook.
Millbrook is in control of the Cap 8 with an 11-6 overall record and a 7-0 mark in the league. They already beat Broughton once this season by one-point, but Friday's game is at Broughton.
With a win, Broughton will force a tie for first place with Millbrook. The Caps are 14-3 and 6-1 in the Cap 8.
Sanderson's next game is on Friday at Wakefield.
