@ bbwjmr wrong about an upset? I guess so. Apex shot 77% in the 4th, 89% from FT 75% from 3 and to only miss 1 free throw in in the 4th they get all my props. If Millbrook would have ran the same plan they have all year it would have been a win I think. Apex team won so they are the better team. Hoping they can continue to shoot that way and the East should have the Championship. Great game between coaches and the kids played well. Refs were pretty even on both sides. Nobody had excuses just a great game! Good Luck to Apex next week!

Another masterful job by Coach David Neal. TJ Evans will get all the accolades (and deservedly so) but playing just as large a part was Ian Boyd
He was sensational against Gary Clark (24 & 10) and was equally impressive against the Millbrook front line.

The supporting cast came through against Broughton and Hillside. Last night they seemed very timid. A lot of passing outside and not really looking for the "shot". Very little 3 pointers were attempted even when Clark was being triple teamed. TJ Evans on the other hand did have a good supporting cast last night. Clayton's defense was terrible last night. There was so much concern on Evans that they left 15 and 5 open for shot after shot. Apex made very little mistakes and made a high percentage of their FREE throws and 3 pointers. Tonight was end of the Clayton run for awhile unless another superstar comes to town.

Have said all season Clayton's supporting cast not good enough to get to final four in state. Different year, same result. Clark has had nice career, think hell be solid player at Cincy. Clayton hoops goes back to being Medlin of the conference.

Congratulations to the Apex Cougars on their win over Clayton tonight. Clayton could not hit a FREE throw if their lives depended on it tonight. With almost 20 seconds left in regulation the game was tied and Clayton had the ball coming out of a timeout. They then waited too long to try and get the ball in to Clark and ended up with off balance shot that went off the side of the rim and sent the game in to OT. Apex won this game by making FREE throws in the OT period. If I counted them correctly Clayton missed 15 FTS and only had 7 shots from 3 point land of which they made 1. Apex did the same thing to Clark that Broughton did last week, they doubled him up. Only tonight the Comets did not have that outside support from their shooting guards. Good luck the rest of the Cougars.

Millbrook is loaded with good depth. I see them handling PC fairly easily, but I wouldn't be surprised if PC makes the game tight for a while until Millbrook pulls away late 3rd early 4th.

The Lake Norman/Ardrey Kell game was boring, until the final minute. AK gave it away missing the front end of three different 1 & 1s in the final minute.
W Charlotte/Page is going to have all the fire works. Both very skilled, both very fast, both with 4+ D1 kids.
On paper, the winner of WC/Page will be favored to win it all. That said, Lake Norman has some mid matches on the floor. If they can find a way to dictate pace, they may have a chance. Page/W Charlotte winner will be easy money as state champion though

EAST- If Clayton gets more than just Gary, they'll roll past Apex. If not, expect something similar to Friday night.

Millbrook will roll past PC- At least a 18 point win. Juan can score like crazy, Nubian has a nice post presence and can shoot it a bit, Jaqueez can put some points up as well. Not a chance their production meets that of Brown (30 on Friday night), both Clemons, and Goldsmith not to mention the other 8 guys who find the score sheet on a nightly basis.

    Predictions- Millbrook 84-62 over PC
    Clayton 72-68 over Apex

As for the west, I will be seeing what they have to offer tonight. Page is very good. Jeremy Harris is an elite wing and they have two of the best guards in the state. Their 4th leading scorer is 6'7 240 and boasts 14+ a game in Hill-Mais... their very talented but don't doubt Lake Norman's size or Santa Ana on Ardrey Kell, he is a great all-around player. West Charlotte isn't a 20 seed, it's just the disadvantage of Charlotte schools... they all beat each other... The west should have a lot of talent coming into Reynolds next week. I think that it's either West Charlotte or Lake Norman but I would love to see Page...

@ bbwjmr2 doubters? last time I checked Millbrook beat Apex last. Until Apex beats Millbrook, Millbrook is the better team.

I also believe Panther Creek can run, The argument that was made for Millbrook was about their defense and how deep they were. Millbrooks Defense forces about 40-50 points off transition from defense, the other 20-40 come from offense. Yep, Should be a close one! SMH! If panther Creek squeezes this out they deserve it!

    Greensboro Day?!?! Really? NEXT!

  • bbwjmr2 Mar 4, 2014

I don't have excuses for Apex. I was responding to your comment silkyblue when you claimed Millbrook beat every team by 22-36 points. Just letting you know it is not true. As stated I would love to see Apex play Millbrook so we can hush the doubters for good. Also, don't get it twisted. Millbrook will not walk all over Panther Creek. Panther Creek likes to run too. Who ever has the best outside shooters will win the game.

For those fans who never played the game at this level or higher, any team ranked in the top 20 has a chance to beat anyone on the court!

    @Silkyblue
Don't read into only the seeding of a team. A lot of variables go into a season...

Trinity and Winston Salem Prep were brought up because you said, "Page has not faced a defense like Millbrooks this year." Page played, and beat, both of these teams this year...Trinity goes 11-12 deep so does Winston Salem Prep

  • Silkyblue Mar 4, 2014

@ bruiser mcgee you are correct I haven't seen W Charlotte this year just going off seed rankings, to run the "same" defense as Millbrook with "quicker" players I would think they would have been more than a #20 seed. So as I stated before any game W, Charlotte has won this playoffs has been an upset being a #20 seed.

As far as the comparison to Winston Salem Prep and Trinity Christian, No comment, They have nothing to do with the 4A Bracket. What team mentioned other than Millbrook goes 11-12 deep during a game. Proving my point that NO TEAM in the State is DEEPER than Millbrook.

@ bbwjmr2 Apex Lost because a few players were late and didn't start? They did play. When Millbrook lost to Apex in the Playoffs last year it was no excuses. A team is who you put on the floor. Everyone sees how talented Apex is by the overall record. If they win Friday they will see Millbrook Saturday along with the 2 players that didn't play at all.

Apex players did not use an excuse so why are you? I guess we can learn alot from kids sometimes.

Apex lost to Millbrook the first time they met. The final score was 47-60. Coach Neil benched three of his starters in the first game. Apex played their worst game against Millbrook this year. I would love to see Apex play Millbrook so everyone can truly see how talented Apex is this year.

Silky, I assume you have not seen W Charlotte this season...

They have 6'8 Simeon Carter, 6'4 Austin Harris, and 6' Trey Foster returning as starters off that team last year. They had 6'2 Malik Massey, starting PG at Vance last year, transfer in. They also have Mike Boone and Isiah Blackmon as key reserves off last years team.

That said, back is the lynchpin 5'11 Nakia Rivers, who missed most of the season with various issues, but (in my opinion) is the team's best player.

Haha, so this is me giving you way to much information to tell you my point. West Charlotte team plays the exact same defensive style that Millbrook does, and does it with quicker athletes.

That said, Winston Salem Prep and Trinity Christian both also employ a defensive scheme similar to what Millbrook does.

On the West I think it will be page. W. Charlotte lost alot last year and pretty much becuase of seeding each game they win is pretty much an upset. Millbrook over Page 16+. Goldsmith will have a great game and open it up for Millbrooks bigs inside. Chris Clemons will also help open up the floor. Page has not faced a defense like Millbrooks this year. Looking forward to great games from everyone.

    Millbrook should represent the East...

Apex has beaten Clayton already, but I think Clayton wins this one. That said I would never count David Neal out of any game, winner take all.

Panther Creek has had a great run and kudos on the New Hanover win...

Millbrook defense is just too much for all teams left. The only team left, that plays a style to disrupt Millbrook is Apex, and those two teams wont play...

That said, Page or West Charlotte (Nakia Rivers being back is a HUGE boost) will win it all...

Apex vs Clayton. If Clayton's role players step up along with Clark's scoring, Clayton with the win by 12, If not Apex by 3-6. Every game this playoff season has pretty much gone down to the wire by shots at the buzzer or a 5-10 point margin.

Millbrook vs PC. Millbrook has won every game by 22-36 points and has scored over 80 points in every game after the Christmas break but 1, over 90 in 4 of those. No team is as deep as Millbrook remaining in the playoffs, scoring has also been distributed throughout the team which shows thet everyone is confident with attacking the basket & shooting the ball. Millbrook over PC by 26-32 points,

    Final Prediction:
Millbrook vs Clayton in Final. Millbrook by 16+, Clark will go for 30+ but Millbrook will limit the supporting cast with consistent defense, Millbrook scores 50+ per game off transition which will definitely have Clayton winded.

Millbrook vs Apex in final. Millbrook beat them last time by 26 without Goldsmith and Blue due to football. Goldsmith will add 10+ points & 8+ rebounds & Blue will get key rebounds and get the ball out in transition and is strong enough to tire down the 3-4 of Apex, so Millbrook by 30+. With the players that Millbrook has this year the only team that can beat them is.....MILLBROOK.

    State Championship...to be continued... ;-)

I would have thought that 32 for Broughton was going to match up pretty good with Clark, but that young man was in way over his head and never offered a challenge to Clark. Gary ran him from one end of the court to the other.

Apex has NO ANSWER for GARY CLARK... Someone called me a non believer in Apex. No I like Apex... But if I chose Apex then that would be a huge slap in the face to Gary Clark. That boy wants it bad, WHO will guard Gary... Ian Boyd? Whom I think is very talented in football and basketball, but Gary Clark has size with skill. He's #8 in the state for a reason.

And its obvious Millbrook is better than PC, but I could see another upset. Sophomore Juan Munoz is a great PG and will probably be the best PG in the state of his class. It is going to be a chest match between the two great coaches. I still feel an upset, I do not know why

On a more serious note, I believe that Clayton proved a point in the Broughton game. Clark was doubled and tripled teamed most of the night with the 4th period being the exception. While all this was going on his teammates were making the Caps pay for attention that they were giving Clark. I would assume that Apex will come in with the same strategy in stopping Gary Clark. His teammates will need to step it up again and provide that much need scoring. I like Clayton in this one 71-59 over Apex. See you in Fayetteville.

Agree with a lot of points, but PC's crowd is not very good. They have good numbers but they barely make any noise. they just stand up and do nothing. I was impressed with Apex fans at the NHS game. Clayton knocks off Apex. Apex can't handle Clark. Millbrook beat PC because they play harder with more depth.

I think Gary Clark wants a ring more than Tj but Apex has the TJ backcourt duo, and Millbrook is the favorite, but if Catamount Chaos travels to Fayetteville, I'd favor Munoz and the Catamounts.PC always had one of the best student sections, but so does Clayton.

I have Clayton over Apex, 67-60
And believe it or not, PC over Milbrook 69-67 OT
