Looks like my playoff predictions didn't shape up too badly, especially since I made the guesses before the brackets were even released. I think I've nailed Holly Springs and F-V so far. I definitely missed on Jordan and Heritage though. I was pretty much +/- 1 spot for nearly everyone else.

    FVHS doing well so far.

    At Pinecrest tonight.

    Should be a great one!

Millbrook and Heritage rematch, Pinecrest vs Leesville Road, Jordan vs Fuquay. Really interesting matchups for Round 2!

I think there's a lot more potential for upsets in the 2nd round, but I do like Apex to give Garner all they can handle, I like Millbrook over Swett, and I really like Green Hope to move onto a second round matchup with Holly Springs.

Very intriguing matchups for round 1. Any potential upsets you think are likely?

Not a real bad guess at the over/unders - long before even knowing what the brackets were going to be.

Unfortunately for many of the best local teams in 4A, they're all lumped together in one section of the bracket. So after Round 3, only one of this group of teams can possibly remain: Holly Springs (2 seed), Garner (3), Cardinal Gibbons (6), Green Hope (10) and Apex (14) . That's really unfortunate, and what happens when you use the type of seeding process being used this season by the NCHSAA.

Under/Over of how far some of the local teams will go in the playoffs. The number I use is the round that I predict the team will get knocked out in.

Holly Springs 5 This is the best team in the best conference. Battle tested with great pitching.

Jordan 4 Another battle tested team that has had great pitching too. Can't afford to play down to the competition -like they have a few times this season.

Fuquay Varina 3 Struggling down the stretch, this is still a very talented team that can beat anyone.

Garner Magnet 3 Coming on strong. Some deep LH pitching.

Cardinal Gibbons 2 Recent history tells us that another early exit is likely for this very talented team. Historically, no one has done less with more in the playoffs ...

Green Hope 2 Struggling but experienced team with good pitching.

Leesville Road 2 Pitching alone will win at least 1 game,

    Apex 2, Millbrook 1, Heritage 1, Middle Creek 1, Rolesville 1, East Wake 1, ECHHS 1, Riverside 1

Holy cow, I just saw that Cardinal Gibbons lost its third in a row yesterday - this time to East Chapel Hill. And it looks like they lost with their ace pitcher on the mound. Any insight as to what is going on with that team?

Millbrook and Leesville matchup next week looks to be the game that decides the Cap-8. Millbrook sits 9-2 with Leesville at 8-2 (MaxPreps). only 8-3 Heritage is a threat to shake things up as they play Millbrook Friday night. My money is on the Pride

What the heck has been going on in the last week for the best teams in the area? Fuquay loses 3 in a row, including one to a 3 and 16 Apex Friendship team? And Gibbons loses two in a row, most recently last night to the Wake County HomeSchool team? On senior night? And the night before beating Gibbons last week, Jordan loses to a 6 and 12 Athens Drive team?

I guess this is high school baseball, and why the games are played on the field and not on paper.

It should make for an interesting state playoffs this year though, as nearly everyone looks beatable.

Interesting to read the review of last night's Jordan-CG game. When I saw CG early in the season, I thought their lineup was really strong throughout.

I went to see the Jordan/Cardinal Gibbons game tonight in Durham. I did not have a rooting interest - I just wanted to see some good HS baseball. It was a great exciting game with a nice crowd so it was well worth the effort to drive out there. Jordan won the game 4-3. My observations: Jordan was fundamentally sound and nearly everyone in the lineup was a threat at the plate. Their pitching was solid, but not outstanding. Their defense was very solid, and they had some very timely hitting. Gibbons has some high end studs, and the top of their order is loaded. Their starting pitcher was very good and probably pitched well enough to win. The problem was that they were not very strong in the bottom half of their order and surprisingly they did not look to be all that well coached. A good many baserunning miscues cost them several runs. In my opinion, they probably should have won this game.

These are two very good teams who both could contend for the state title.

This year, I think it's a pretty easy call to say the top of the SWAC.

Better teams, top of Cap-8 (Leesville, Millbrook, Heritage) or top of SWAC, (FV, Holly Springs, Middle Creek, Apex, Green Hope)?

Jordan gets thumped by Athens Drive last night 8-2. That's 3 losses in the last week (all out of conference) for them. Of course, they're playing 6 games in 9 days, which is never easy, and quite the strain on their pitching staff. We'll see if they can bounce back tonight against Cardinal Gibbons. Will it be Garcia or Miller to start the game for Jordan? Most likely it will be Bloomberg for the Crusaders.

It will be interesting to see what the pitching situation looks like for Jordan after today's game with Athens Drive - for tomorrow's game with Gibbons.

Wow, the top of the CAP-8 is all locked up with Leesville, Millbrook and Heritage all at 7-2 in conference play. The PAC-6 is a two-horse race between Cardinal Gibbons and Jordan - and tomorrow night's game between those two teams will likely determine the winner of the conference this season. The SWAC is a meat-grinder with 4 teams still in contention, but Holly Springs is on a 13 game tear right now, including a pretty good pounding of F-V this week.

Heritage will not win the Cap 8. They can't score in big games. The Millbrook vs Leesville game will be the one to watch. Right now it is a 3 way tie but after a while Heritage is going to lose and it will come down to Millbrook or Leesville

Clayton has 4 lefties in the rotation with 2 Seniors, 1 Junior and a sophomore. 2 starting lefties have a combined 1.73ERA in games started. Pretty solid anytime you can throw 4 lefties out there. Club plays pretty good defense and is still pretty young with 3 seniors, 3 juniors and 3 sophomores starting.

Based off of results so far this year, (not based on commitments/past years), who are the best arms you've heard about from the Cap-8, SWAC, Greater Neuse, etc? Which teams are suited with the best pitching staff for a deep playoff run?

FVHS looking great so far. Don't look now...but we're #4 in the area and 9-1 overall.

All aspects of the game are looking good.

We play Apex Friendship tomorrow and we play the Malvern Prep team on Sat. at 12:00. I see Jordan beat them yesterday. Malvern is supposed to be a very strong team/program from Pennsylvannia.

Baseball is a humbling sport. Jordan just might have gotten a little full of themselves after the Gibbons win. They're still very good, and so is Gibbons. Most likely 2 of the best 5 teams in the state.

FVHS was on their game last night vs. Middle Creek. Lots of great hits, some nice defense and the pitching was incredible.

Heritage is rolling right now, winning the first 4 in conference beating Leesville 11-3, Sanderson 10-0, Enloe 11-4, and Wake Forest 9-4. Should be a good one on Friday vs Millbrook. Leesville vs Heritage the second time around will also be a really good game. Heritage always starts off hot though, they'll probably end up tailing off and finishing in like 3rd like they always do

  • Sports is life Mar 21, 2:38 p.m.

Hmmm, looks like Ben Miller won't be pitching against Cardinal Gibbons today, since he threw 84 pitches on Friday (and thus would require 4 days of rest). Interesting strategy. I guess that means that Conner Garcia will be the starter. He did shut down Green Hope a couple of weeks ago...

FVHS at Middle Creek tonight. Should be a great one. Expecting a very close game.

I think the Cap 8 is still very much wide open. Millbrook's 3 losses have all been tight games, and I believe they had been ahead at some point in each one of them. Leesville's going to get better fast, now that their ace pitcher is back from basketball. Both Sanderson and Wake Forest have played surprisingly well so far, but Wake's schedule hasn't been all too tough either.

  • Motoman Mar 14, 9:17 a.m.
    Bench Warmer

I wonder if any Cap 8 teams are in the mix. Right now you got to look at Heritage. I thought Millbrook and Leesville would make noise but both got beat soundly in non conference games. Sanderson has 1 loss but.....The Season is still early

  • Sports is life Mar 13, 9:34 p.m.
    Towel Boy

Agree that Jordan is very good, and those in the know in Wake County are already aware of the potential of this team. Their pitching is very strong. Ben Miller is the real deal, and is following up on his strong summer 2016 travel season. The Jordan/Gibbons game next Tuesday should be a great one, and will be an indicator of the team to beat in the Pac 6.

  • Deacin Durham Mar 13, 6:43 p.m.
    Towel Boy

Durham Jordan has slowly but surely developed a quality and complete lineup. In year's past, they have had high D1 studs like Alex Raburn (UNC now Nebraska), Wood Myers (UNC now College of Charleston), Steven Oakley (NC State)) but were held back by a last of quality HS talent around them. They return almost everybody back from a very solid 2016 campaign. They are light on true high D1 studs though Sr. Will Hoyle (Duke) is as complete of a HS player as you will find and one of my favorite players to watch and Soph. Ben Miller may reach that elite level player. They are above average up and down their lineup in all aspects of the game. Really neutralized a very good Green Hope team in a 2-0 shutout earlier this year and have ascended to the #4 spot in the N&O rankings. Have been watching this team come on slowly but surely over the years. Wake County folks should pay attention to these guys. Durham folks already know about them.

  • rcace Mar 10, 1:39 p.m.
    Towel Boy

I saw Cardinal Gibbons play Leesville Road last week. I expected a very good early season game, as there were multiple D1 commits on both squads. Unfortunately for Leesville's baseball team, their ace pitcher is still playing basketball - as they're in the state final game. That said, Gibbons is a very solid team and has bats all the way through the lineup. They won 9-2. If Gibbons can get strong pitching beyond their first 2 or 3, they're going to be really tough to beat.

  • Sports is life Mar 10, 12:29 p.m.
    Towel Boy

Is Cardinal Gibbons really as good as they appear to be? They seem to be crushing everyone they play.

  • FV Bengals Mar 8, 9:13 a.m.
    Bench Warmer

Green Hope brought their bats last night. They were finding the gaps.

FV made 4-5 errors that hurt them a lot. FV also left quite a few guys on base.

It was 10-2 going into the 7th...so GH really did bring it to FV.

  • rcace Mar 8, 8:33 a.m.
    Towel Boy

Well, Green Hope took down FV last night 10-4, so the whole Southwest Wake conference looks up for grabs at this point, early in the season. It looks like it's going to be a real shootout this year, with probably 5 or 6 of the 9 teams there being in contention. With the new pitching limits this year, it might come down to who has the most favorable schedule from week to week.

  • FV Bengals Mar 7, 2:51 p.m.
    Bench Warmer

Green Hope then got beat by Apex Friendship....after Jordan.

With that said - It's gonna' be a great game tonight at Fuquay....w/ Green Hope coming to town.

    GO BENGALS!!

  • rcace Mar 3, 9:02 a.m.
    Towel Boy

Whoa, Green Hope loses last night to Jordan 2-0. Jordan's got some pitching this year, and could make some noise in the Pac-6. Meanwhile Green Hope has only produced 1 run on 8 hits in their first two games.

  • FV Bengals Feb 22, 1:52 p.m.
    Bench Warmer

Most teams playing scrimmages this weekend? FVHS hosts Leesville and Orange on Sat.

These scrimmages are so important. It really allows the kids to face some pitchers that are actually trying to get them out (vs. just BP) and they help the coaches do some talent evaluation.

The regular season starts next week....so everybody better get the cobwebs out soon!
